“I have had a wonderful time in Sri Lanka. Everything went smoothly, all the people were fantastic and I have learnt so much. Both working at BPT and at Dr Rohan’s were thoroughly enjoyable, and I felt so welcome (even going with Dr Rohan for dinner with his family on the final night!). Thank you so much for helping me to organise this trip. You were always so quick to sort out any problems or queries I had, and made it all very stress free!”
“It was the most amazing trip of my life ! The food was very good at Jivdaya. People were very friendly! We made friends for life. We got along with them very well and it was an important part of this trip as well as the clinical experience. Surgeries were during the afternoons, it was so amazing. Within the first week we were already able to do the surgery by ourselves. We learnt so much.”
“I absolutely loved my time at Jivdaya. I found the vets and staff very easy to work with and the hospitality was exceptional. The experience was excellent and the staff were very focused on making sure we saw and did as much of the clinics work as possible. I was also impressed with their surgical standards of care in relation to the location and non profit status.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to say how amazing it was, I am now confident in performing castrations and spays on my own and I would not have the confidence or the skills without my time with the Blue Paw Trust. Everyone was extremely friendly and keen to help in anyway possible. I would recommend it to all final year vet students.”
“I had an amazing time with BPT and Dr Rohan! The first week at BPT was great for surgery and I managed 3 every day. The people were lovely and relaxed. It was great that they trusted me enough to let me get on with the surgeries on my won by the end of the week.
Dr Rohan has to be one of the nicest vets I have worked with on placement! He really cares about his students as well as helping me plan activities for my free time. There was less surgery in the second week and more medical cases to see which I expected and I reckon I averaged 1 – 2 surgeries a day. Thank you for ensuring the trip went so smoothly, it is definitely a trip that I will never forget and the experience gained was second to none!”

“I told Dr R, I had an amazing time with them and he was quite taken aback .. I think it just adds to the charm and humbleness of him, he’s a very well respected man …..He’s a great teacher, very calm, patient and methodical, the other vet at the clinic was just the same (Nelum). They made me feel very welcome and involved….
In comparison BPT has more surgical experience and Dr R has more medicine, clinical opportunities in tropical diseases with less surgery (the mix I guess varies week to week just depends on what comes in). I’ve been so fortunate to be able to afford to go and am so very grateful.

“At Dr. Rohan we could question the owners and do the examination of the patient. He let us think about what the problem might be and what the possible treatments could be. Very nice to learn about some more exotic diseases. Helen and myself took away a skin tumor from a dog. We did the operation by ourselves, at first it was scary, but in the end we are very happy that Dr. Rohan (and Dr. Nelum, his partner) had so much confidence in us! We did another quite complicated operation under Dr Rohan’s supervision, but also all by ourselves. So just to say that at Dr. Rohan we’ve learned so much because we could do almost everything from questioning owners, thinking about the problem and what to do. + he had a lot of confidence in us and that’s the best way to learn something I think.”

“We loved dr Rohan’s thought the placement was great it was brilliant to see the clinical side as well as the surgery and he was so helpful and had no problem explaining everything and translating with the clients. He let us have a go at everything ivs and vaccinations and surgeries as well we’d both definitely recommend it. Negombo was also far nicer than Colombo and the hotel was so accomodating would definitely stay again and the food was good but we ate out most nights as the restaurants around are more touristy and delicious. We really loved it but would recommend doing the weeks in Colombo first otherwise we wouldn’t have benefited from the surgery with dr Rohan but we preferred our week with him than in Colombo and he works seven days a week so you learn loads.

“I didn’t realise how much I learned until I returned home. I now recommending fellow students to the project.”

“I would highly recommend this experience. We got amazing surgical experience which we wouldn’t have to in the UK especially of bitch spays. This was the main surgery that was performed. Ended up doing about 23 bitch spays altogether with constant supervision from a vet.”

EGYPT: “I had an amazing time and already want to go back! The placement was also superb, and everyone there made us so welcome. We had a really fun time and learnt a lot. Thanks so much for helping us arrange the project, it has been a trip of a lifetime and I would highly recommend it to other vet students!”
Suzanne (Bristol Uni)
“We really enjoyed both the projects. The first week was very interesting, as you know that was the first time we had the opportunity to do surgeries and to know how to do it for real. The second week was also really useful. We had the opportunity to practice what we learnt on the first week and to see diseases we’ll never see here in Europe. Dr Rohan is a really nice and enjoyable person. He explained us everything but he also asked our opinions. He let us doing a lot of things and also tried to schedule as many surgeries he could on that week for us.”

“The project was really good overall. We worked with a large range of species and it was interesting to see how much of a difference could be made with relatively little resources. Dr Girgis was absolutely brilliant. He knows a huge amount and is still keen to learn new techniques from other countries ( we demonstrated the flank cat spay they do in England). He also taught us his technique of doing bitch spays through tiny incisions!”
Nicola (Nottingham Uni)
“I had a fantastic time in Egypt. Was very busy and carried out at least 4 operations absolutely solo with only Girgis observing. I was able to learn and then practise my techniques over the 2 weeks so I actually did a lot considering I’d never operated on a living animal before I went.”

“I spent two weeks with the BPT team in June 2014 and wholeheartedly recommend the experience. Drs. Siri and Ganga were both excellent teachers, and incredibly patient. We managed two to three surgeries per day and were able to complete spays and castrations on both cats and dogs. I was incredibly impressed with the program and while given the freedom to test the waters as a surgeon felt incredibly supported during my time there. If you have the opportunity to join this great program, by all means go!”
“Working with Dr. Rohan in his Negombo clinic has been the single most rewarding EMS experience I’ve had in vet school. In addition to performing spay or neuter surgeries nearly every day, I saw a plethora of exotic medicine cases. I was able to meet with clients to take histories, perform physical exams, discuss differential diagnoses lists, and even carry out some diagnostic tests. Dr. Rohan encouraged both hands-on learning in addition to text-book revision of tough concepts, and would routinely break for case discussions. My opinion as a vet was sought and valued, and he trusted students to carry out tests like skin scrapes, blood smears, eye & ear exams. I was given ample opportunity to take blood, place cannulas, start patients on IV fluid lines, and give injections. I grew leaps and bounds in terms of confidence and day-one competencies. I cannot recommend this program enough.”
